What makes Rocinha a potentially dangerous place to live is the prevalence of a violent drug trade. This leads to endless tussles and encounters between the drug peddlers and the police, giving rise to a dangerous ambiance. The population of 100,000 has a poor economic state and high mortality rates. What is more, Rocinha being built on steep mountain slope is susceptible to landslides, rock falls and floods.

Kibera, meaning ‘forest’ in Nubian is the home for a million people, which earned notoriety for being the biggest slum in the whole of Africa. Most of the population here are tenants with no rights living in mud-walled shacks owned by landlords who have vacated Kibera. Most of the population is African Muslims, who huddle up eight per shack, often sleeping on the floors.

Just 20% of Kibera has electricity and no regular supply of clean water. The dam water that people use is the root to cholera and typhoid, aggravated by poor sewage condition. There is widespread menace of AIDS and the total absence of government medical facilities. What worsens the general livelihood of Kibera is the availability of a cheap alcoholic drink called ‘Changaa’.
Faced with rampant unemployment, most of the slum-dwellers resort to Changaa early in life and grow into criminals, drunkards and rapists. The problem is aggravated by the availability of cheap drugs and tendencies of glue sniffing. The result is the rising rate of unwanted pregnancy among girls of all ages who invariably turn to abortion. Some charities and churches are working towards the betterment of the condition.

Linfen, China

Located right at the center of Shanxi Province of China’s coal region, Linfen is one of the most polluted cities in the world. The air is thick with dust and smoke to a degree that hampers visibility. The three million people who live in Linfen take regular doses of arsenic rich water, further polluted with fossil fuels and poisonous gases through the air they breathe. You can actually catch a lasting stink when you step in Linfen with overflowing sewage everywhere.

The river flowing by Linfen has its water thickened with oil. No wonder! The inhabitants using this water have high occurrences of cancer. When you look at the trees around the Linfen factories, they present a sad withered picture. It is the last place on earth that you would think of sending someone, even your worst enemy.

The lead and cadmium accumulations in this former British colony have skyrocketed since their discovery in 1902 when Zambia was valued for a rich lead mine. Although the mines have closed and no smelters are operational now, Kabwe residents have faced the threat of lead poisoning through decades. Blood tests in the children have revealed lead concentrations exceeding 5-10 times the normal limit that could turn fatal any day. Only recently, the World Bank has allotted funds for tackling the problem.

The fallout that occurred in April 26, 1986 has led to the leakage of nuclear radiation 100 times more pronounced in volume and effect than that of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki explosions. It is a horror that thousands of Russian, Ukrainian and Belarusian children living close to the damaged plant still cannot escape the radiation impact.

Environmentalists attribute such high mortality rate to the ceaseless production of organic chemicals like toxic dioxins, hydrogen cyanide, lead and sulfur mustard. The phenol and dioxin contents in the Dzerzhinsk waters surpasses the normal limit by seventeen million times.

The 300-metre-long Basaac Apartments were built due to the town planning director Lu Ban Hap’s initiative to put up a low-cost social housing project in the 1960s. However, this government-financed housing project has been the home to 2,500 refugees since 1979, when its legal tenants vacated the property because of the onset of decay. The structure made of concrete and brick has now given way to dangerous gaps in between the reinforced concrete walls marked by the ingrowths of parasitic plants. The building can collapse any time burying alive its 2500 residents.

Japanese artists are renowned for their Zen-like patience, but spending 7,500 hours hand-crafting a motorcycle would seem to push that to absurd lengths - until you see the motorcycle. Then you wonder how Chicara Nagata managed to build something so stunning in so little time.
Nagata's award-winning motorcycles are breathtaking works of art, so it is fitting that three of them are featured in an exhibit at New York's Ippodo Gallery and the Contemporary Asian Art Fair. The bikes are as meticulously crafted as they are stunningly detailed, blending vintage parts with modern design to create motorcycles that are simultaneously retro and futuristic.
Nagata's art pays tribute to the very machines that almost killed him, and to the people who saved him. "There are many ways a man can express himself, but there are not many things I can do," he writes in the notes accompanying his exhibit. "I have found something on which I will pour my life."
Nagata, 46, was 16 when a motorcycle accident nearly killed him. He endured eight months of intensive therapy and several blood transfusions during his recovery, all the while wondering why he should survive so horrible an accident when so many others haven't. Nagata, whose name means "power," decided to honor those who had died, and those who saved him, by creating art. He became a graphic designer in 1982 and launched his own studio a decade later.
His love affair with motorcycles was rekindled in 1993 when he started building his first custom. It took him seven years. Whereas most motorcycle "builders" do little more than open the Fat Book parts catalog and start ordering parts they simply bolt together in a week or two, Nagata hand-crafts everything but the drivetrains. The frames, the suspension components, even the throttle assemblies and hand controls are designed and made by Nagata.
He's built 13 bikes so far. Nagata won the grand prize in the 2006 AMD World Championship of Custom Bike Building for Chicara Art I, a sleek retro-ride powered by a 1939 Harley-Davidson U motor. He took second place last year with Chicara Art II, which features a 1942 Harley WLA motor. The three bikes featured at Ippodo can be had for $1 million apiece which, given the level of workmanship, strikes us as a bargain.

On Tuesday afternoon Katrina along with her ‘Rajneeti’ co-stars Arjun Rampal and Manoj Tiwari flew into Patna in a private jet hired by Prakash Jha. They headed straight from the airport to Jha’s residence in the suburbs. The reason was the inauguration of her director Prakash Jha’s news channel at Patna’s Shri Krishna Memorial Auditorium amidst other big names like Manoj Tiwari and Bihar’s chief minister Nitish Kumar.

Katrina’s presence on the stage made the crowd nostalgic. Even Nitish Kumar had to admit that his presence was not required with Katrina around.

The best part of the entire event was Katrina wooing her audience with her Bhojpuri dialogues trained by Prakash Jha who admits it wasn’t easy coaching Katrina to speak a few line in Bhojpuri. “But it worked, and how. Katrina had the whole of Bihar eating out of her hands. It was so unexpected from someone who has the reputation of barely managing her Hindi,” chuckles Jha.

Prakash cannot just stop praising Katrina and says, “Katrina had no idea of her popularity in Bihar. She has a very deep connect with audiences. She has the kind of image that Hema Malini has. Not one cheap remark, no jostling crowds, no. They now call her Bihar Ki Beti.”

Katrina, Arjun and Manoj flew back to Mumbai late Tuesday night. Prakash Jha intends to hold the premiere of ‘Rajneeti’ in Patna instead of Mumbai.

San Marino is the oldest recorded sovereign state and constitutional republic in the world, having been founded on 3 September 301 by stonecutter Marinus of Rab. Legend has it that Marinus left Rab, then a Roman colony, in 257 when the future emperor, Diocletian, issued a decree calling for the reconstruction of the city walls of Rimini, which had been destroyed by Liburnian pirates. The constitution of San Marino, enacted in 1600, is the world's oldest constitution still in effect.

Tuvalu , formerly known as the Ellice Islands, is a Polynesian island nation located in the Pacific Ocean, midway between Hawaii and Australia. Its nearest neighbours are Kiribati, Samoa and Fiji. It comprises four reef islands and five true atolls. Its population of 12,373 makes it the third-least-populated sovereign state in the world, with only Vatican City and Nauru having fewer inhabitants. In terms of physical land size, at just 26 square kilometres (10 sq mi) Tuvalu is the fourth smallest country in the world, larger only than the Vatican City at 0.44 km2 (0.17 sq mi), Monaco at 1.95 km2 (0.75 sq mi) and Nauru at 21 km2 (8.1 sq mi).

The first inhabitants of Tuvalu were Polynesian people. The islands came under the UK's sphere of influence in the late 19th century. The Ellice Islands were administered by Britain as part of a protectorate from 1892 to 1916 and as part of the Gilbert and Ellice Islands Colony from 1916 to 1974. In 1974, the Ellice Islanders voted for separate British dependency status as Tuvalu, separating from the Gilbert Islands which became Kiribati upon independence. Nauru (pronounced, officially the Republic of Nauru and formerly known as Pleasant Island, is an island nation in Micronesia in the South Pacific. Its nearest neighbor is Banaba Island in Kiribati, 300 km to the east. Nauru is the world's smallest island nation, covering just 21 square kilometres (8.1 square miles).

Settled by Micronesian and Polynesian people, Nauru was annexed and claimed as a colony by the German Empire in the late 19th century. After World War I, Nauru became a League of Nations mandate administered by Australia, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom. During World War II, Nauru was occupied by Japanese troops who were bypassed by the Allied advance across the Pacific, and after the war ended, it entered into trusteeship again. Nauru was declared independent in 1968.

Throughout the first half of the 20th century, Nauru was a "rentier state". Nauru is a phosphate rock island, with deposits close to the surface, which allow for simple strip mining operations. This island was a major exporter of phosphate starting in 1907, when the Pacific Phosphate Company began mining there, through the formation of the British Phosphate Commission in 1919, and continuing after independence. This gave Nauru back full control of its minerals under the Nauru Phosphate Corporation, until the deposits ran out during the 1980s. For this reason, Nauru briefly boasted the highest per-capita income enjoyed by any sovereign state in the world during the late 1960s and early 1970s. When the phosphate reserves were exhausted, and the environment had been seriously harmed by mining, the trust established to manage the island's wealth became greatly reduced in value. To earn income, the government resorted to unusual measures. In the 1990s, Nauru briefly became a tax haven and illegal money laundering center. From 2001 to 2008, it accepted aid from the Australian government in exchange for housing an illegal migrant detention center that held and processed asylum seekers trying to enter Australia.

From December 2005 to September 2006, Nauru became partially isolated from the outside world when Air Nauru, the only airline with service to the island, ceased to operate. The only outside access to Nauru was then by ocean-going ships. The airline was able to restart operations under the name Our Airline with monetary aid from Taiwan.

On 15 December 2009 Nauru became the fourth country to recognise Abkhazia, and on 16 December recognised South Ossetia, regions of Georgia which had been de facto independent since the early 1990s and were recognised as such by Russia after the brief Russia-Georgia summer war of 2008. Reports suggest that this decision netted Nauru Russian aid of around US$50,000,000.

Vatican City is a city-state that came into existence in 1929. It is distinct from the Holy See, which dates back to early Christianity and is the main episcopal see of 1.147 billion Latin and Eastern Catholic adherents around the globe. Ordinances of Vatican City are published in Italian; official documents of the Holy See are issued mainly in Latin. The two entities even have distinct passports: the Holy See, not being a country, only issues diplomatic and service passports; the state of Vatican City issues normal passports. In both cases the passports issued are very few.

The Lateran Treaty in 1929, which brought the city-state into existence, spoke of it as a new creation (Preamble and Article III), not as a vestige of the much larger Papal States (756-1870) that had previously encompassed central Italy. Most of this territory was absorbed into the Kingdom of Italy in 1860, and the final portion, namely the city of Rome with a small area close to it, ten years later, in 1870.

Vatican City is an ecclesiastical or sacerdotal-monarchical state, ruled by the bishop of Rome—the Pope. The highest state functionaries are all Catholic clergymen of various nationalities. It is the sovereign territory of the Holy See (Sancta Sedes) and the location of the Pope's residence, referred to as the Apostolic Palace.

The Popes have resided in the area that in 1929 became Vatican City since the return from Avignon in 1377. Previously, they resided in the Lateran Palace on the Caelian Hill on the opposite side of Rome, which site Constantine gave to Pope Miltiades in 313. PTCL is Going to Double the DSL Speeds: Again

It seems like PTCL is going to double the DSL speeds of broadband customers very soon, most likely with in month or two, at most – same like it did last year. According to news the existing packages will be doubled as

1 mbps to 2mbps
2 mbps to 4mbps
4 mbps to 8 mbps

According to PTCL representative and feedback of different users PTCL is testing these double speeds on randomly selected subscribers from different areas of country. These users will be downgraded after the testing period ends to their original speeds and will be upgraded after official announcement, which is most likely to be on 23^rd march, but can be delayed as no final date has been announced yet.
The up gradation process may take several months according to the size of network. Though PTCL is using is ADSL2+ which supports up to 24mbps but at same time there are many subscribers on Copper media, which supports up to 4 mbps at most (that too with distortion).
We hope that student package users will also get this upgrade and can enjoy higher speeds at discounted rates as recently PTCL discontinued all student packages above 1mbps.

How many times have you marvelled at a pair of jeans while shopping, then taken them into the trial room for a look. And felt utterly disappointed because on you, the jeans look nothing like they did on the model in the advertisement?

Sure, very few of us are built like supermodels, but the best part about a well-constructed pair of jeans is that they can do wonders for every kind of shape.

How do you know what's right for you? What mistakes must you avoid?

We talked to some fashion pundits for definite guidelines for jean shopping.

Different cuts for different body types

Before we unveil the cut that matches your body type, make note of this simple rule from designer Gavin Miguel: it is mandatory to try out jeans.

Even if the size seems perfect and the length looks right when you hold it up against you, you will not be able to tell how it fits until you try it on.

Stylist Rakhi Parekh-Patil adds, "Forget about colour and brand name, the first thing to look for is a great fit. And ensure that the pair you choose makes your legs look long."

Body type: Heavy

Dos: Pick jeans that sit at your waist -- not too high, not too low.

Ultra-low waist jeans tend to create unsightly bulges while very high-waist jeans add bulk to the stomach area, counsels designer Sabina Singh.

Choose a pair that is slightly flared at the bottom as this balances out the width of the hips.

Gavin recommends choosing a dark colour as it produces a slimming effect.

Don'ts: Resist the urge to wear ultra-low waist jeans.

"The back in these jeans rides too low, and for this body type isn't flattering, " says Gavin.

Jeans which are extremely tapered at the bottom are a no-no.

Avoid styles, which have embellishments on the seat, as they tend to add visual bulk.

Body type: short

Dos: There are several ways to add the illusion of height to a pair of jeans. A slim-fit with straight legs works well for this.

Rakhi recommends jeans that are cut just at the ankle because they work well for those who want to add height.

"Wear lighter coloured jeans. You can also go for striped jeans which definitely add height. If you are wearing low-waisted jeans, the tops you wear should be slightly shorter as this gives length to the legs, " advises Gavin.

Finish up the look with a slinky pair of heels.

Don'ts: A major mistake is to fold the jeans at the bottom. This makes you look shorter. " Instead open the hemline and shred it; that again adds length, " suggests Gavin.

Avoid jeans which are heavily flared at the bottom. They make you look shorter and wider.

Stay away from capri jeans as they make legs look shorter. If you are fond of the style, wear it with heels to give the illusion of height.

Body type: Thin

"Denim is a thicker fabric, so it works especially well for really thin people, " says Gavin.

Dos: This body type is ideal for low-rise jeans. The slightly flared leg is also flattering to a thin frame as it adds much-needed bulk to the ankle area.

Petite Channel V VJ Juhi talks about her personal favourites.

"The style I find works best on me is the low-waist boot cut. It's a comfortable fit and is one of the most flattering looks for those who are thin, " says Juhi.

Model/actress Shruti Seth finds a slim, straight-fit really flattering.

Don'ts: Stay away from skin-tight jeans.

Warns Juhi, "Don't wear extra tight, stretch jeans if you're very thin. You'll end up looking gawky."

Special Mention: The boot-cut

The boot-cut (skims the thigh, has slightly flared lower leg) is considered the most universally flattering style in jeans.

It fills out a too-thin frame, balances a wide-hipped body, adds length to short legs and best of all, never goes out of style! Team it with heels (have the hem long enough to skim the front of your footwear) to fully exploit the wonders of its construction.

Get the perfect fit

Cuts decoded

Don't get intimidated by jeans jargon.

Low-rise jeans: These sit a few inches below the waist. Ultra-low rise sit even lower, on the hips.

Straight-fit: Cut straight down the length of the leg, with a streamlined fit. These have no flare at the bottom.

Relaxed jeans: A comfortable, roomy fit at the seat, thighs and legs.

Cigarette jeans: Narrow-cut, tightly-fitted, all the way from the waist to the ankles.

Flared-leg jeans:Narrow at the knees and go on to flare at the legs.

Next, the jeans you try on should be checked for two important factors: comfort and length.

Comfort is key

The experts are unanimous about the importance of comfort while picking jeans. "Please do not squeeze yourself into a pair of jeans. That completely defeats their purpose, " says VJ Shruti.

Adds Rakhi, "You can suck your stomach and make them fit while trying them out, but how long will you be able to do that in daily life?"

As VJ Juhi puts it, comfort is key.

Watch that length

Rule of thumb: jeans should never be longer than your shoes.

As Parekh-Patil puts it, "Long jeans that cover your shoes entirely, make you look like you are walking on stilts." Ouch!

Turn around and check out how the jeans hold your butt. There should be no excess sag of the fabric in that region. The jeans should follow the curve of your bottom comfortably.

When buying low-waist jeans, make sure to sit and bend a few times while trying them out to gauge exactly how low they will ride in the back.

Hot styles
"Jeans with stretch that hold the body really nicely, are in. The whole pre-washed* look is also back with an added creased look which looks great now. Super low-waist jeans are giving way to slightly higher waist jeans, " says Gavin Miguel.

(*pre-washed: washed and treated while manufacturing to give a used look as opposed to dry denim which is not treated.)

The boot-cut has many takers.

"The narrow, straight fit is in; and the boot-cut never goes out of style, " says Rakhi.

Sabina says, "The boot-cut is always very flattering and thus remains in. Jeans with ripped, frayed edges are also in now, as are jeans with the bottom turned over."

Over-embellished jeans tend to make regular appearances on the scene.However, do wear with caution. "If you like the style, make sure you pair it with a plain top, " says Sabina.

Rescued eight years ago during a police drugs raid in Atlanta, Georgia, the three friends were only cubs at the time and barely two months old. They had been kept as status symbol pets by the drug barons. Delivered to the Noah's Ark animal rescue centre in Locust Grove, Georgia, the decision was made to keep the youngsters together.

"We could have separated them, but since they came as a kind of family, the zoo decided to keep them together," said Diane Smith, assistant director of the Noah's Ark zoo.

"To our knowledge, this is the only place where you'll find this combination of animals together, they are our BLT, (bear, lion and tiger).

Living with the zoo's founders for the past eight years, Shere Khan, Baloo and Leo have now moved to a purpose built habitat were the US public can now witness first hand their touching relationship.

"We didn't have the money to move them at first," said DIane.

"Now their habitat is sorted and they have been moved away from the children's zoo areas where the public couldn't really get a good look.

"Now, though, it is possible to see Baloo, who is a 1,000 pound bear, Shere Khan, a 350 pound tiger and Leo, who is also 350 pounds messing around like brothers.

"They are totally oblivious to the fact that in any other circumstance they would not be friends."

Handled by Charles and Jama Hedgecoth, the zoo's owners and founders, the three friendly giants appear to have have no comprehension of their animal differences.

"Baloo and Shere Khan are very close," says DIane.

"That is because they rise early, as Leo being a lion likes to spend most the day sleeping.

"It is wonderful and magical to see a giant American Black Bear put his arm around a Bengal tiger and then to see the tiger nuzzle up to the bear like a domestic cat.

"When Leo wakes up the three of them mess around for most of the day before they settle down to some food."

Surprisingly for three apex predators with the power to kill with a single bite or swipe of their paw, they are very relaxed around each other.

"They eat, sleep and play together," said Jama Hedgecoth, founder of Noah's Ark zoo.

"As they treat each other as siblings they will lie on top of each other for heat and simply for affection.

"At the moment they are getting used to their new habitat.

"Shere Khan is being quite reticent about the move, but Baloo, the bear is very good at leading him on and making him feel comfortable and safe."

Explaining that the three 'brothers' have always seemed to share a unique bond, Charles Hedgecoth, Jama's husband and fellow founder talks about his role in their upbringing.

"They are obviously not wild animals any more," said Charles.

"Noah's Ark is their home and they could not possibly be separated from each other.

"You just have to remember who you're dealing with when you are with them though.

"It's when you forget that these fellows are wild animals that you get yourself in trouble."

According to DIane Smith, the trio's new habitat cost an estimated £15,000 and had to be constructed carefully, in order to accommodate its occupants.

"The clubhouse had to be very sturdy for the guys, because they all sleep in it together,"

The exhaust silencer has also been modified with the result producing an even more marked and thrilling sound under hard usage whilst still delivering just the right comfort levels at cruising speed.

From a styling point of view, the package also includes some distinctively sporty exterior and interior features with carbon-fibre widely used in the latter. The 20" split-rim wheels are new with a special diamond-cut and matte silver finish. The rear diffuser is finished in matte black to underscore the car's new set-up and highlight the chromed tail pipes. The cabin is sportier too thanks to a sophisticated mix of full-grain leather, black Alcantara® and carbon-fibre trim.

The new seats are trimmed in a new two-tone combination of leather with black Alcantara® inserts, and the seat backs are trimmed entirely in carbon-fibre. Embroidered in contrasting stitching on the headrest are a Prancing Horse and the words "Handling GTE".
